Extra-Curricular
Coaching in Primary Schools
Through the Primary PE and Sport Premium, primary schools in England now have additional funding to enhance their PE and school sport offer to children. Many schools have identified a role for sports coaching through this additional funding. Coaches can perform a valuable role in supporting and up-skilling teachers to improve the delivery of physical education in primary schools as well as providing breakfast, lunchtime and after school clubs.
Head Teachers and Primary PE Leads are extremely busy, so here is the essential information for all schools:
Coaches should only be employed through the Premium funding when a need has been identified by the school’s PE and school sport review
Your local Sports Partnership can help you identify a suitable coach
The toolkit offers a free self-review tool to ensure your use of coaches is both effective and sustainable
Coaches should not be used to displace teachers during curriculum time
Out of hours activities delivered directly by school staff or on behalf of the school are the responsibility of the Headteacher and governing body.
Headteachers always need to ensure they are complying with their employers requirements regarding qualifications and evidence of coach competence. This will necessitate working to the employers minimum operating standards, which all coaches must meet.
